IS Your Car Battery AC or DC?

AC and DC Battery

Car Battery AC or DC

If you are a car lover, you must definitely know a lot about the car and its various parts. A car is a storehouse of various parts including a battery. A battery is the most important part in a car and should always be prioritized and should be checked from time to time. A battery provides power to all the other parts of a car. It supplies power to the ignition system by providing a high voltage spark and continuously supplying to all the electrical appliances and music system etc.

Since a battery is a source of power in a car, have you wondered what your battery type is? If it is AC or DC? A battery can be of two types based on the usage and voltage, both AC and DC. Both have their own benefits and uses depending on the use in different applications.

Understanding AC or DC

Before getting into details of what kind of battery is, we need to understand what AC power is and what is DC power. AC is Alternating current and DC is Direct current. Alternating current can be defined as the charge of electrons that can change its direction alternatively. Direct current can be defined as the charge of electrons moving in one direction only.

AC current is used in households supplied through the outlets to the appliances etc. DC current is used in mobile phone batteries, flashlights etc.

Are Batteries AC or DC

Car batteries feature both positive terminal (+) and negative terminal (-) which simply means that they are Direct Current power sources. Since the DC power sources move in one direction as discussed above, it is more suitable and works best with car mechanics.

Taking lead acid batteries as an example, as most of the car batteries are lead acid batteries. The electrodes are of lead and the electrolytes contain sulphuric acid and distilled water. When a chemical reaction takes place, it generates the flow of electrons which produces electricity which is then supplied to the car system. AC changes its directions multiple times in just a second which is known as frequency. Because of this, it is not feasible to use it in a car as there is no option of inverting the electrodes. Hence, the DC power source is used in the car battery. DC voltage works best in such scenarios.

AC voltage usually ranges from 120V to 230V and a DC voltage ranges from 5V to 12V. For a car, a very small power voltage is required for its functions to work efficiently, therefore, DC voltage is used in it.

Understanding the car mechanics is a complicated matter. Understanding the type of battery can make you smarter and increase your car life by making correct decisions for your car and its battery. AC batteries are prone to fire, give electric shock and are less stable compared to DC batteries. From the above, we can conclude that a DC car battery is better.
